Only 40 minutes from Kandy, the historical capital of Sri Lanka, and a 3 and a half hour ride from Colombo International Airport is Madulkelle Tea & Ecolodge. Perched on Hunnas mountain is a 30-70 year old tea plantation, overlooking the Hulu Gaga valley and the “Knuckles” Mountain range.
Bought by a group of French people with a local partner, Bhathiya Gunasekara, in 2008, the tea plantation was in poor condition. The region was known for its high quality tea leaves.
A tea plantation consultant was called in to advise on the improvement of its quality. Today the tea plantation produces double than in the past, respecting the growth capacity of the plants, hygiene and the collection of the tea leaves.
On this 22 acre tea plantation, amongst thousands of acres of tea growing land, Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge intend to establish 20 to 30 platforms on the ridge for luxury tent accommodations, so that the tea plantation vista is preserved. Half of these luxury tents will be available for purchase. It will be an ideal location to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the pureness of this generous nature.
Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge intends to be a responsible contributor to the development of the Madulkelle Township which comprises several tea estate villages, offering more opportunities to the villagers, development of infrastructure, such as roads, electricity and water. Sustainable tourism principles will be the guiding light for the decisions to be made in the future.
